I’m Off to the Land of the Midnight Sun! #VisitFinland

I’ve been keeping a little travel plan hush-hush lately, but now that everything has been officially confirmed and I have my tickets in hand, let me announce this by dancing in circles…

I’M GOING TO FINLAND!!!

Yes, Finland, and I’m leaving in exactly one week! So how did this all come about? Well, about a month ago I heard that Visit Finland was launching a summer campaign inviting bloggers to come and experience their country. Over 350 people applied to the program and I was 1 of the 10 that was selected! Plenty of jumping and dancing ensued.

So what do I know about Finland?

Finland is a bit of a special country for me. You see, about thirteen years ago I met one of my closest friends, a Finnish-Canuck named Raakel, and I’ve been hearing stories about Finland ever since. Over the course of our friendship, I have learned that:

– Santa comes from Finland

– Finns have a really strange obsession with the sauna

– running into an icy lake right after a sauna session is perfectly normal

– Marimekko is one of the best design companies

– ice-fishing is a fun winter hobby even if you have to spend hours in sub-zero temperatures waiting for a lone fish to bite

 – the sun hardly sets in the summer and it hardly rises in the winter

– Angry Birds are from Finland, and so is Nokia

– and lastly, Suomi means Finland in Finnish

What’s the plan?

You will find me playing and eating my way around Finland this summer! I will be heading over to Kemiönsaari (Kimito Island) – the largest island in Finland. Kimito Island lies in the southwestern archipelago which is home to over 8000 islands and small islets. Expect cozy cottages, afternoons by the lake, hikes through the forest, berry picking, and late nights spent outdoors while the sun’s summer rays still shine in the horizon.

Summer Night in Helsinki

I am excited to be visiting (and writing about!) a country that I’ve been hearing about for so long, and I’m even more excited that I get to share this experience with Samuel who has never been to Europe before.

So much for going zip-lining through the jungle for my birthday; I’ll be boarding a flight to the Land of the Midnight Sun!

Here’s a little preview of what’s to come in the next few weeks:
