A Weekend at the Amari Watergate Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand

I was recently back in Bangkok again over my birthday weekend and decided to celebrate with a stay at the Amari Watergate Bangkok. Even though I have been to the Big Mango a couple of times before, I haven’t done very much sightseeing around the city, so this was the perfect opportunity to explore for a few days while indulging in a bit of luxury.

Here’s the grand tour of the place.

The Room

We got a spacious Grand Deluxe room on the 17th floor, which included cozy beds you could sink into, a nice seating area, and floor to ceiling windows with spectacular views of the city below.

One of the things I first noticed in the bedroom was the pillow menu. My bed already had the plushest of pillows, but if that wasn’t enough, I had the option of choosing from 7 other types of pillows!

The menu had everything from ultra-soft microfibre to non-allergenic pillows, but the one I was most curious about was the buckwheat pillow. Sadly, they had no more buckwheat pillows available when I called to order (these sure must be popular!) but I am now more determined than ever to sleep on one of those.

Breakfast

Breakfast was simply delectable! What I liked about breakfast at the Amari Watergate is that it caters to visitors from around the world with a very extensive menu that covers many international cuisines.

I was immediately drawn to the Middle Eastern station which had fresh pitas, creamy hummus, and fatoush. There was also an Indian station where you could get curries with various flat breads like paratha, chapati, and parotta. Over at the Japanese station you could opt for sushi rolls with a little wasabi to wake you up for the day. And of course, you also had the Western classics which include pancakes with maple syrup, omelettes, blueberry muffins, croissants, banana bread, and many other baked goods.

The Pool

The swimming pool felt like a bit of a tropical oasis with all the palm trees, exotic flowers, and lush vegetation along the length of the pool. Many of the hotel’s other facilities like the gym, sauna, steam rooms, squash courts, and Breeze spa were also located on this floor.

And if you weren’t quite up for a swim, the 8th floor had a nice terrace with lots of greenery where you could just lounge around with a book in hand and enjoy the surrounding views of the Big Mango.

Location

The Amari Watergate is well located in the Pratunam neighbourhood which is right in the heart of Bangkok.

It’s well connected with the rest of the city via BTS Skytrain, MRT Subway, and even the city’s river taxi network – I highly recommend hopping on one of these boats just for the experience!

This part of the city is also home to Siam Paragon, Central World and Platinum Shopping Mall, which means that if you get a rainy day or two like I did (this is monsoon season after all), you can still do plenty of things indoors.

Service & Hospitality

The staff at the Amari Watergate were very attentive from the minute we rolled up to the hotel in a sparkly tuk-tuk with flashing lights (oh, yes, we keep it classy). Everyone was kind, courteous and ready to help us plan our stay in Bangkok.

I also enjoyed that the hotel had live entertainment in the main lobby in the evenings, where you could grab a seat one of the many couches and watch a traditional Thai music performance.
